Adam's Eye : Chapter Eight

Adam’s Eye becomes well known throughout the village and around the town and news about Adam’s talent spread almost in the city. He received a lot of positive feedbacks from his clients and new orders keep coming in. Zaharah however makes sure that Adam did not overwork himself. She began to feel worried for him.

“Adam maybe you need to take a break. You have been working so hard eversince we open up these shop.” Zaharah was stroking Adam’s hair as he lay on her lap. Adam smiled faintly and close his eyes. Zaharah knew Adam was not listening to her pleas right now. “Do you think my dad will be proud of me …for all of our achievements?”

“Have you ever tried contacting him again?” asked Zaharah. She began to becomes concerned about these because all this time Adam had never really talks much about his family especially his dad. Adam shake his head and then he opens his eyes and look at Zaharah. Zaharah saw the same darkness again. “What do you think of me right now?” ask Adam in a monotone cold voice. Suddenly Zaharah feel scare about this other side of Adam which she had not seen before.

“You are scaring me.” Adam gets up from Zaharah’s lap and sat beside her. Still looking intensely at her waiting for her answer. And then he looks down on the floor. Zaharah felt sorry for him cause she believed Adam do have a dark secret which he kept to himself and these has got to do with his past. Zaharah held out her hand and hold on to Adam’s as she says “ You do know how I feel about you.” Adam looks up and Zaharah saw Adam had tears filling up his eyes. Zaharah moves closer towards him and gave him a hug.

“The very first painting which I painted was a picture of my family. I remember I was around ten. My mum saw that painting and she was amazed with it. So the very next day she bought me all kinds of painting stuff, drawing blocks, oil paints, brushes and so many other things and I guess I am the luckiest boy. She was very supportive about my interest. Positive comments to boost up my courage and negative ones to improve on it.” Zaharah let go of Adam to allow him to continue further. Zaharah could tell how much his mother meant to him.

“You should look at her face when the first time I won the inter-school painting competition. I could tell she was so proud of me. It was a painting of her favorite flower vase..it was antiqued but uniqued.” Then Adam stop and he looks at the wooden floor board again. The smile has gone and it was replace by the solemn and anger which makes Zaharah fell kind of scare and nervous.

“He tore that painting and threw my trophy on my face which left me a cut on my forehead.” His voice turns cold and icy. “Even though the scar had long gone but my heart is still bleeding . I hated him for what he did.”

“Is it your father?” asked Zaharah in a meek voice. Adam nodded and looks at Zaharah with tense written all over his face.

“I had to hide the rest of my paintings and I can only paint when he’s not around for his business trip. These carries on until I’m about seventeen. I had my own room on the attic of our home. My mum actually pass me the keys and told me to used that room to do my painting cause my father, he seldom goes up to the attic anyway. So at last I had my very own secret place to do my paintings. It was just nice and it had a small window which display the view of our garden and courtyard.” Adam stopped and remains silence for a moment. “One day he finds out about that room and the secret which me and my mum has been hiding. It was Zaki,..I don’t understand why he has to do it…I trusted him…he’s my brother but he breaks my trust and told our dad all about it. “On that night itself my father hits me and say things which really hurts me. As he began to turn to my mum that’s where I began to retaliate and push him to the wall. Zaki came over to held me as I was losing my patience. That old man after regaining his balance he climbs up the stairways towards the attic. I followed behind him and there I saw he was throwing out my paintings out of the window. He looks so angry and all I could do is stood there in silence. My heart was burning with rage and disappointment cause all that painting…..were from my hard labour for almost seven years. After he felt that he had clear up all that, he rushed down towards our courtyard. Then to my horror he get the kerosene oil and began splashing the liquid all over my precious works. My mum was screaming telling him to stop. I held on to my mum cause I know that it was hopeless. He lit the match and burnt all of them . I could almost feel that my heart burns along with my paintings.”

“The very next morning he acted as though nothing happens and he plan to give me a post in his company as an accountant which I loathe. I remain silence and began to think hard. Eventually I agree but on a condition that I was to be sent for further business study to prepare myself for this new job. He was so please with my request and began searching for the right school to enroll me in. I guess it took him just couple of days to get me a place in one of the boarding school. Before he sent me off, he wrote me a cheque with quite a lump sump of money. After boarding on the train I had plans on my own. Before this trip I had contacted one of my art school mate. We both plan to enroll ourselves in one of the art boarding school in this foreign country.” As Adam continues he began to give a small grin.

“Three years of studying and mastering the arts, I finally graduated and decides to head back home. Standing on the front poach of my house before knocking on the door is nerve racking. Finally I found my courage to ring the bell. What a relieve it was my mum who opens the door. Placing my luggage on the floor I gave her a hug. Then she looked at my face for quite a while. And then there he was comes out from his reading room followed by his favorite son and he said, “You’ve done very well. So you feel proud about what you did. Your glorious achievement huh?” My mum she’s very defensive about my needs and situation and before she could says anything my father shoots me with all kind of accusation. He says things that I have ruined my own future…I can never raised a proper family…it was awful listening to all that crap.”

Adam stoods up and walks towards the front window. He had his back turn against Zaharah and he was deep in his thoughts. It was cold and chilly night it seems that even the climates seems to be isochronizing with Adam’s feeling and thoughts. Zaharah did not want to mention about the marriage arrangement which Adam had with his mother. Zaharah stood behind Adam and gave him a hugged hoping that this small gesture might warm up his cold, sinking thoughts.
Adam turn around and look in her eyes. Her eyes was no longer sad and solemn like the very first time when he met her. He could see the joy and high spirit in her eyes. Zaharah took Adam’s hand and bring him into his painting room.

“Take a look at all this Adam. You have indeed fulfill your dreams. Now we should focus towards the future… our future.” Cried Zaharah as she whirls around the room. “I know you miss your family especially your mum…well maybe we can give her a call tomorrow. We can used the phone in our shop.” Zaharah was so full of excitement about her idea. Adam was pleased with it and he nodded.

They decide to close their shop the next day. Adam was searching for his home number which he had kept in his pocket book. The pocket book looks old and tattered. “Does this belongs to you for seven years too..?” teased Zaharah as Adam was busy scanning for the number. Adam look at Zaharah and smile back in amusement with Zaharah’s remarks. It took them almost half an hour until the number was found. It was written lightly with a pen and they had to strain their vision to read the number. Adam picks up the receiver and begans to dial the number. He was feeling very nervous right now and he felt that his heart is racing very hard. There was a long ringing tone and it seems like ages until someone picks up.

“Hello. This is Adam.” There was a remote silence on the other side of the line. But Adam could define the tearful sob and it was his mother. Zaharah walks closer to Adam and had her eyes fix on him.

“Adam it is really you. How have you been? I’ve been thinking about you all this while.” Adam was so glad to hear at last his mother is saying some thing.

“I’m doing good ma…how about you?”

“I’m okay…it is just my old ailment keeps coming back now and then. I guess the weather is getting cooler these few days. So how is your wife? Do you like my choice? Heehee!”

“She’s wonderful ma. What more can I ask for.” Replied Adam while smiling at Zaharah. “ It’s been a long time and we both wonder if we could meet up at someplace.” Adam was hoping that his mum will agree to this invitation.

“I heard you have been doing well with your painting career about your shop and you know how proud I am.” His mum replied.

“Ma can we meet ?” asked Adam again. “Just name the place and we shall be there.” Adam was not giving up.

“Alright. You know the old café which I used to take you after your lessons when you were still a child. The day after tomorrow will be fine for me.”

“Thanks ma. I’m sure me and Zaharah gonna be there.” Said Adam as he puts down the receiver.

“Don’t you ever think about it Ana. I’ve already disown him and he’s not my blood anymore.” Zayeed Adam’s father was so furious about the meeting plan which his wife Ana had with their son.

“It’s almost a year now Zayeed. Can’t you open up your heart for this son?” Ana was sobbing tearfully now.

“How about him? Does he ever thought about me? He shatters my dream and hope. Everthing gone just like that.”

“You have Zaki to run your business just leave Adam alone. Let him be what he wants to be.”

“I’ ve seen Adam has the potential to succeed in this business world. He has full of ideas and was always been such an enthusiastic person ever since he was a child. That’s why he should be my successor unlike Zaki. Zaki is too layback. always needs to relies on someone to do things for him.” Replied Zayeed with full of disappointment in his tone. He loves his sons. Both of them. It is just that he cannot accept the fact that Adam has rebel against him. After all this time he has pin high hopes on Adam on becoming his successor for his business empire.

“No. You’re not allowed to meet him. And make sure you listen to me if you don’t want the same fate as Adam.”

“You know something Zayeed. I just don’t understand how could I still be with you after what you have done to our son. I know you do miss him too but it is just your ego which had hardened your heart to accept all this.” Replied Ana tearfully and left the room leaving Zayeed all by himself.

The journey was about two hours from the town to reach the café which Adam had planned to meet with his mum. Adam book four seater which was situated near the window where he could see the roadside.

“How do I look?” asked Adam nervously.
“Grunge.” Replied Zaharah smiling. Adam laughed to her respond. He was wearing this dark green long sleeve coloured shirt which he had rool the sleeves just below his elbow and he was wearing dark jeans to go with it. He trimmed his hair abit here and there but still keeping the fringe. “Gorgeous. Like the very first time I met you.” Said Zaharah playfully sweeping off Adam’s stubborn fringe away from his eyes. Zaharah was wearing a sleeveless pastel green coloured knee length dress and wore a white cardigan over it. She tied her long hair into a bun. “So are you.” Replied Adam.

They had few cups of coffee with some cream puffs while waiting for his mum. Adam look at his watch and it was almost an hour they have since waited but there is still no sign of her. Adam begins to feel anxious and keeps on looking out of the window if his mum was walking by the lane. Zaharah too began to feel anxious but in her mind she has this strong feeling that his mum is not coming. However she decides to keep that thought to herself because she did not want Adam to feel disappointed. It was almost three hours now and the night soon begins to sets in. They were not many customers at the café by now and the ‘close’ signage has been put up at the main entrance.

“Come on let’s go home.” Said Adam at last. His voice was small and Zaharah could tell that Adam was ultimately upset and disappointed.

Two weeks later business at Adam’s Eye runs as usual. Adam was back to his chirpy and humorous manner much to Zaharah’s relieve.

“I need to clear this old palate for the new ones alright.” Cried Adam as he began carrying few cartons of old oil paints and the old palates into the store room.

“Okay” replied Zaharah as she began dusting off the upper shelf of the cabinet which was left empty for putting up Adam’s latest painting collection.

As she was busy cleaning up the wooden plank, she did not realized that someone had entered the shop. While walking slowly and checking out the paintings which was either hang or just place against the wall, suddenly Zaharah begins to catch his attention. He was looking at her with full of interest and smile to himself.

“May I help you.?” It was Adam and that startles the men. Adam had notice that he did not came in just to look at the painting but he seems to be interested in something else even though Adam could only see his back.

“Adam...aren’t you surprised to see me?” Adam realized it was Zaki as he turns to face Adam. Zaharah was surprised and stop cleaning but stood there looking at Adam speechless.

“It’s been a long time.” Cried Adam and they both began to hug each other and Zaki playfully tugged Adam’s fringe. “You look well, bro.” cried Zaki. Zaki was tall and lanky too. He was fairer in his complexion but he too have that nice set of eyes only lighter brown in colored. His hair was short and nicely kept. Zaki still had his eyes set on Zaharah and this makes her feel very uncomforatable.

“This is Zaharah…my wife.” Said Adam bringing Zaharah closer to his side. Zaki reaches out his hand to shake hers. Zaharah gave her hand but quickly draw her hands away. ”I finish tidying up the storeroom alright.” Zaharah decides to leave both of them together and goes to the storeroom.

“Nice place you’ve got yourself here.” said Zaki as he touches some of Adam’s painting while phasing around the shop.

“There’s a coffeehouse nearby this area. Maybe we can have a drink together.” Adam made this request as he really needs to know about his family situation ever since he left the house.

“They do makes good coffee here.” Exclaimed Zaki as he took few sips of the hot caffeine. Adam look at his cup and was not so sure where to begin this conversation. Since that incident where his father had burnt his paintings due to Zaki’s being unable to keep the secret had definitely effect their sibling relationship. “So how’s the feeling of being able to survive on your own without anyone’s help?. And being able to walk away from our father’s shadow huh?” Adam knew Zaki was always being sarcasm in his words just like their father. Adam looked across the other side of the road and then turn to face Zaki again.

“How’s mum?” asked Adam cause his main attention is to ask about his mum and dad and not to start some kind of silly arguments.

“She’s fine. She keeps on talking about you now and then.” Replied Zaki taking another sip of his coffee. Adam notice his brother has change a lot. He had his hair back comb and like his father he wears stylish branded clothes unlike Adam who feel more comfy with just a simple T-shirt and jeans.

“We supposed to meet two weeks ago but she never came. That is so unlike her to break promises.” Said Adam as he drew his chair nearer to the coffee table.

Zaki looks at Adam and from the way he looks Adam knew something was not right. “Why do you still wants to bother us ?” replied Zaki looking very unpleased.

Adam was shocked upon hearing that remarks and almost loses his control but he decide to remain compose cause he does not want to create any unnecessary scene here. The last time they threw punches at each other was the thing which will definitely be a good reminder to him.

“You know how’s our father’s like?” said Zaki looking solemnly at Adam.

“How’s father?” asked Adam. “Did he do something to mum?”

“Our father….his dying. He has brain cancer. And he can only live for another four to six months now.”

Adam was in shocked. He can feel his hands are trembling and then he became numb and speechless. Then this sense of guilt sets in. All the things he did and said to his dad began to runs back into his mind. It ‘s just like being taken back to that point of time. “ I need to see him…!” said Adam looking directly at Zaki waiting for his response.

“To shorten his lifespan? I don’t think that is a good idea.” replied Zaki spontaneously upon Adam’s request. “ You know how much he detest you right until today so you just go ahead with your life and please don’t come back.” Said Zaki scornfully. He rose up from his seat pick his coat which he had hung earlier on the back of his chair and leaves.

Adam went back to his shop. His heart was heavy and it felt like there’s a huge lump growing inside his heart. His head hung low as he enters the shop and Zaharah notice that something was amiss. Adam walks straight into his work area and begins to string up one of the canvas to the wooden frame. Zaharah look at Adam and that intense was written all over his face. A tinge of sadness came over Zaharah’s thought cause it breaks her heart seeing Adam acted this way. She knew something went wrong after his meeting with Zaki. As she could not contained her feelings anymore she went over to Adam.

“So how’s the meeting?” asked Zaharah casually.
“Just don’t bother about that alright!” Adam snapped as he look at Zaharah.
“Okay…fine!” replied Zaharah. She felt hurt towards Adam’s response cause throughout their marriage Adam never acted in such a manner. Zaharah went back to the store room and sat there. She was in a verge of tears but she try to control it. Adam felt awful after what he did. He cover his face with his hands. He too was in a verge of tear “What have I done?” he thought to himself and decides to go to the storeroom. As he enters the room he saw Zaharah was sitting on the small stool which they place it in the store. Zaharah knew Adam walks in but she refused to look at him. She felt angry and upset. Adam walks towards Zaharah and sat beside her on the floor.

“My father …he’s dying.” Said Adam as he looks solemnly at his painting which he had kept for the incoming order. Zaharah turns to look at Adam but she just remained silence. Then suddenly Adam breaks down and cried. He just could not hold on to his remoseful state any longer. Zaharah quickly went over to Adam and hold him.

Back at home, things were very quiet. They had dinner in silence. Adam with his own thoughts and Zaharah had several questions and doubts running in through her mind. Adam rose from his seat after finishing his dinner leaving Zaharah all by herself. Usually Adam will help Zaharah clearing up the table each time they finishes their meals but not on that day. Adam went straight to his working room and begins to work on his unfinished painting. It was a pretty mosaic pattern which he was inspired by the hilly views. The patterns had some mixture of golden bronze with some tinge of black running along the pattern.

Zaharah slowly enters the room and look at Adam while he was busy with his painting. It took him quite a while for him to realized that Zaharah was sitting on the small wooden stool looking at him while he was engrossing with his work. Adam turn to look at Zaharah and smile. He felt it was not right for him to act cold towards her because none of this is her fault. He put down his palate and paint brush and then he took a wet clothe which he place near his work station and began cleaning his hands. After he felt that his hands are clean enough he walk to wards Zaharah and sat beside her. He held out his hands and touch Zaharah’s hair as he look at her. “ I’m sorry for making you feel uneasy.” Said Adam as he look sadly into her eyes. Zaharah touch Adam’s face. In her heart she wish she could take all the anxiety which Adam had in him. Adam had his face closer to Zaharah’s and he kisses her.

Adam slept for a while then he wakes up. He looks at Zaharah and she was still sleeping. He bend over and kisses her cheeks. Then he walks out of the bed and leave the room. In a while Zaharah stir herself on the bed and realized that she was alone. She got dress and walks out of the room. She take a peep at the working room but Adam was not there. And then she walks towards the verandah and found him standing leaning against one of the pole as he faces the hilly view. Zaharah could feel the breeze was coming now and then brushing against her skin. She walks towards Adam and sat on the small porched.

“Why don’t we just go ahead and visit them? I meant it is just a waste of time we sitting pondering and wondering what is happening to your family right now. He can’t be angry with you forever because you are his son. We just go and see the outcome. If he welcome us then lucky us but if his reaction is the otherwise then we just leave.” Said Zaharah as she thought that it will be the best for them to give in and take all the consequences.

Adam look at Zaharah with his dopey eyes and nodded as he smiles.

Adam's Eye : Chapter Seven

They both sat together and had their dinner. Zaharah was amazed by Adam’s jovial and humorous character and she seems to enjoy his company. Deep inside her thoughts however she felt kind of inferior towards him and a tinge of anger slips in. He has everything he needs in this world. He got a family, a mother and a father and he’s born with a silver spoon. No worries about getting beaten or any worries to seek food from the rubbish dump to survive like what she and her brother had gone through. Adam notice the sudden solemn expression on Zaharah’s face.

“What’s wrong? Did I say something ..?”
“It’s getting late I need to get my shower now.” Zaharah rose from her seat clearing up the table as she did so. Adam remains silence for a moment. He was confused by Zaharah sudden changes of mood. He felt guilty for no apparent reason. After washing up the dishes, Zaharah went back inside the room to get the towel. As she was about to close the closet, she saw the dress which Adam had bought for her earlier. She took it in her arm.

It seems that she took quite a long time to shower. She cleansed herself pouring the icy cold water over her head again and again. She soaps herself for several times and repeating poring the cold water over her head. It felt good though. she felt like a brand newself. Being reborn and being away from all the despair and suffering which she had been through as though it was a routine of her daily life. Now she felt like she had found a new freedom. She can take her time and do things as she likes without being tormented again. Feeling satisfied with her bathing process she began drying herself with the towel. She took the dress and put it on. Then she look at herself in the mirror which has been in the bathroom eversince they move in. She stared at her own reflection for a while. It seems like she has not been looking at her own reflection for a very long time. She realized that her hair has started to grow longer and she realized that her doe eyes looks sad and tired. She walks away from the mirror and walk towards the bathroom door.

In her room all by herself, she began drying up her hair. She did not realize Adam was standing at the door looking at her. As she turn she was caught in surprised. Adam walk closer towards her. Zaharah was stunned. She was uncertain about her feelings right now. She wanted to run but it seems her feet just won’t let her.

“You don’t know anything about me.” Zaharah was choking on her words. She was confused and afraid but at same time she feel nice and secure as Adam stand right in front of her.

“So let me. Let me be in your life. There’s so many things we can learn from each other Zaharah. This is fate. Can’t you see that fate has brought us together as husband and wife.”

“Fate huh? And then that fate will take this all away.”

“Are you blaming the fate or are you blaming me for all this to happen?” Adam reach out his hands to touch Zaharah’s dangling wet hair.

“I am afraid I can’t answer to that question right now?” replied Zaharah as she pushed Adam aside and walks out of the door.

At the kitchen, there’s another door which led to the backyard. Zaharah open the door and walks towards the small verandah and sat on the porch. She knew Adam was behind her and he sat beside her.

“I did’nt know we had a backyard. Wow this scenery is definitely breath taking.” Cried Adam as he look at the vast view which surrounds behind their home backyard. Even though the area was only visible due to the moonlight but they knew it is a green hilly view. It seems that their home was set somewhere on top of the hill. And the breeze is so delicate to the soul.

“Why did you agree to this marriage? Was it your choice or were you force into it?” snapped Zaharah not looking at Adam when she suddenly shot that question.

Adam was surprised. Still looking at the hilly view he replies, “It is my choice. I take it as a challenge from my dad. I wanted to prove to him I can live and survived as a family man without any of his help. I can stand on my own feet.”

Zaharah was amazed by that statement. She looked at him and she saw some darkness in his eyes and it scares her.

“You mean this marriage is a freedom ticket for you. So I am just like a lottery ticket which you just bought with your money and now you are just waiting for the prize result to come out.” Zaharah feel hurt by Adam’s response cause she was not anticipating for that to be his answered.

“Oh ! Zaharah I don’t mean that way. Yah I do come from a rich family but so what. Do you think I am happy? Everything is so restricted. I have dreams and passion of my own. I do not want him to take that away from me. He says that my dream will not led me to anywhere. It is just a waste of time…and I can never raise a family with that dream on my head. He wants me to be his accountant in his business. I can’t breath with that life. So I asked my mum to find me an appropriate girl for me to get betrothed. I want to show him that he was wrong and I can do it without his wealth.”

Zaharah was not sure about responding to that answered. “I guess we are both the same then.” She murmured to herself.

“How about you? Do you agree to this marriage arrangement?” asked Adam breaking the silence.

“I don’t even know I was to be married on that day itself. All I know I was to dress up in a pretty clothes and look pretty. It is scary and haunting. It was horrid memories which will stay on my mind for the rest of my life.”

“Please forgive me. If you had to feel that way….cause I have made you feel that way.” Adam replied calmly. And now he understand why Zaharah was so tense with him. Cause the arrangement was not been made known to Zaharah in the very beginning.

“It is not your fault Adam. I am the one who should apologized. You are just trying to be nice. You know something Adam, apart from my brother, you are the other person who has treat me in a kind manner. My life has always been in fear. Our parent pass away when I was still very young. I could not even recall how my mum and dad looks like! All I had is Izzaldeen. He’s three years older then me and he’s very protective over me.” Zaharah begans to open up to Adam about her life. Adam listened quietly while looking at her as she speaks. “We were adopted by our Aunt Siti. She’s our mum younger step sister. I was turning four and Izzaldeen he was only seven when she took us in. It was living hell for both of us. We were poorly fed and clothes. We need to look for scrape from the dustbin for food in order to survive cause I remember we were always so hungry. We were to wake up in such an early morning to do the house chores. This carries on until we were in our adulthood. Things get worst when my brother was accused of making their daughter pregnant which is so untrue. Cause I know she is seeing some guy from her school and she told me herself about what had happen. I told her to tell the truth and my brother was innocence. I guess she must be too coward to tell and starting pointing finger at Izzaldeen. Our uncle call up some horrid people and beat Izzaldeen up. It was such a tragic scene for me to see all these happening right before my eyes. I pleaded with my uncle to stop but they just carry on and then they took him in a car and drove off. I cried and screamed but it was no used at all.” Tears began to fall down on Zaharah’s soft cheeks. She never thought that she would tell this chapter of her life to anyone.

“And you were asking me about fate just now. If fate has made my life like these taking things which is so dear to me then I guess I got to blame fate. When Izzaldeen was gone part of my spirit goes along with him. And I am afraid…afraid that history might repeat itself. I am afraid to be close to you cause what if this thing happens again. What if fate takes you away from me?”

Adam reaches out his hand and hold onto hers. He caress her hair and touch her cheeks which was soak with tears. “Where do you think I could possibly goes to? I am part of your life now. Zaharah I promised you that I will always be by your side for the rest of my life. For better and worst. That’s what our marriage vows are and I m going to take that seriously.” Zaharah felt so ease by Adam’s reply and also by his touch.

“It’s getting late now. Maybe we should get some sleep.”

The sun began to rise and Zaharah sat up on their bed. She look at Adam who still sleeping so soundly. She felt good about the night before. She knew from that very moment she too will take that marriage vows seriously. She will do her very best to be a responsible wife. Zaharah reaches out her hand and began stroking Adam’s hair.

“You’ re awake.” Said Adam still feeling grogery.

“I’m sorry I don’t meant to wake you up?” replied Zaharah as she lay next to Adam.

“It’s okay. Thank you Zaharah…for being my wife.”

Zaharah was totally mesmerized with his dopey eyes. She giggles and climbs out of the bed.

“Where are you going?” asked Adam tugging Zaharah’s blanket playfully as he did so.

“Get a shower, making breakfast…Adam we need to eat something.”

“I ve got myself a very well-fed wife.Haha!” exclaimed Adam. Zaharah grab a pillow and threw at him.

After breakfast Zaharah decide to go to Aunt Layla’s store to buy more groceries.
Adam just wants to stay behind as he needs to tidy up some of his things. There was another empty room right before the kitchen. Adam walks in that room and open up the window. The view is simply magnificent cause it shows the green hilly view. Adam stared at that view for a while studying the layout and admiring the beauty which God has given to it. After a while Adam began bringing in his large cases into the room. He begins opening one of his case and there were several blank white canvas spread which was already being strung up onto the wooden frame. Next he lift up one of the boxes and took out several stuffs from it. There were some used oil paint and fresh one and also there were few wooden palates. Soon he began opening more of his cases and there were more paintings which he had done few months ago. Adam began to re-arrange his paintings stand them against the wall. Then he set up a tripod stand where he can place his fresh white canvas on it. He get himself busy by now. Pouring out some oil paint on the palate and holding the brush on with his right hand he stares at the view. Deep in his thoughts as he began to breath in deeply. He squint his big round eyes and began on his work. He stroke the canvas with his paint brush gracefully and images started to appear on his canvas. It was like magic in the way he glides the brush on the canvas professionally. it shows that he really loves and enjoying every moment of it. It has always being his dream and passion to become a painter. He did not need to be recognized no..all he want is to paint and he had always dream of pursuing it as a career. After he was halfway done, he covered the unfinished painting with a blanket just as Zaharah came in.

“So this is it? This is your dream? Wow! Adam they were magnificent. Look at all these details…I’m speechless.”

“You like them?” Adam was excited and feel pretty shy about the compliment. Zaharah looks at Adam’s face which had some patches of paint blotch here and there and she smile. She walks closer to him and gave him a peck on his cheek.
“Of course. I love them. If this is your dream then I’m all behind you.”

“Then I’m one lucky man.”

Zaharah saw they were some mountain side scenery, scenery by the seaside and then she saw a painting which looks like a family portrait. She walks closer towards it while Adam began cleaning his hands and face with some tint to get rid of the paint blotch.

“Is this your family?” asked Zaharah as she touch the portrait which Adam had painted seems like recently.

“Yah” replied Adam. After he felt he has done with the cleaning he walks towards Zaharah and stand beside her.

“You mother…she’s so pretty. This must be your father. Woah he looks stern. And who is this?” asked Zaharah as she points her finger at one of the picture of another man.
“That’s my elder brother, Zaki. He’s my father’s favorite. Can’t blame my dad anyway cause he took up businese studies but me…I took his money and enrolled myself in an Art class. You should see how my dad freaks out. What a sight?” replied Adam laughing cheekily remembering the time where he had definitely breaks his father’s heart.

Zaharah shakes her head while smiling to that comment. “Adam, have you ever thought of putting up your painting in a gallery and who knows these might sell. Well I hope you don’t mind me asking these?”

“That thought has always cross my mind but it is I just don’t have the chance to go ahead with it.” Replied Adam.

“Well we can start here, in this village. I know this place is kind of dingy but it is good to invest in something small. We can ask the head village if they do have any empty shops which we can rent and then we can start the selling.” Zaharah was so full of spirit as she talks about the idea.

“Thank God..you are not only beautiful but you are smart too. Alright I like that idea.” Adam knew that his dream is coming true at any point of his life right now.

After few weeks of searching and negotiating at last they found themselves a nice small shop where Adam can start his business. “We need to give it a name?” said Adam as he stood outside the shop looking at the empty signboard.

“Adam’s Eye. How’s that?” replied Zaharah as she busying herself with some small potted plants which she had bought earlier on for the entrance décor.

“Hoho…interesting name..but why Adam’s eye?”

“Cause you have beautiful eyes and you used them to see..no to stare at beautiful things and then like a maestro you began your painting.”

Adam took Zaharah’s hand and look her in her eyes, "Thank you for fulfilling my dreams.” Zaharah smile back. Tapping on Adam’s cheek “ There’s lot to be done.” “We can have few moment together.” Replied Adam holding Zaharah closer to him.

“In just within three days and you’ve sold almost half of your paintings.” Zaharah was impressed by Adam’s progressed.

“I can’t do these without your encouragement and support.” Replied Adam as he was sitting beside Zaharah on the porch at the verandah. It is now becomes their favorite spot to chill out and take a break. “Here come with me cause I have something to show you.” Adam took Zaharah’s hand and bring her to the room where he always does his paintings. Then he began to reveal several of his other paintings which he had hidden behind the blanket. Zaharah almost lost her breath cause these are all paintings of her. In all form of expression , her laughter, her smile when she’s sad…every thing is just like an exact replica of her. “Like looking into my own reflection…these are so beautiful.”

“Cause you are.” Replied Adam.” All these painting are for me to keepsake. And look here is a painting of us during our wedding day as you know we do not have any wedding photos taken.”

“You still remember that lilac kebaya which I put on our wedding day. I’m speechless” Zaharah’s eyes began to tear up. She feel her life has been so blessed and from that very moment she knew Adam was indeed her savior.

Adam's Eye : Chapter Six

It was getting dark outside. Zaharah rushed back home. Her tears are welling in her eyes waiting to fall. Zaharah choked on her breath and was trying hard to fight back her tears. She felt sick to her stomach….guilty and angry to her ego self.
“He was just trying to be nice…why am I feeling this way right now?” That question keeps on playing in her mind over and over again.
As Zaharah opened her front door, she slowly walks into Adam’s room towards where Adam was lying in pain. Zaharah swept Adam’s hair away from his eyes. She was speechless. She was praying hard hoping that the doctor will come by right now.
Just then there was a knock on the door. Zaharah dashed towards the door and she was so relived cause it was Ayob her neighbor and the doctor. Without any hesitation Zaharah welcome them in and show them into Adam’s room. The doctor began examining Adam’s condition. He gets his small touch and look into Adam’s pupils and with his stet scope he check on Adam’s heartbeat. Zaharah told the doctor about the earlier incident when Adam was stung by the centipede. She removed the bandage and show the doctor Adam’s leg. The doctor began checking on it and he gave a concern look.
“It looks pretty bad.” Said the doctor.
“Please do something. If it is about the payment?” Zaharah was in distress cause she forgets that she did not have any money with her right at that moment.
“No..no it is not about the payment. If I were to be late for another 15 minutes your husband might be dead by now .” Said the doctor as he began to get some syringe, needle and some tiny liquid medicine. He fix the needle to the syringe and began drawing out the fluid from the medicine tube into the syringe. Then he take an alcohol swap from his bag while telling Zaharah to roll up Adam’s t-shirt sleeve. Zaharah did so and then the doctor jab the medicine into Adam’s right arm.
“These are some antibiotics and painkiller. Hopefully his fever will subside and the pain plus the swelling will be reduce. If his condition remains the same or it turns out worst please bring him to the emergency department without any delay. Here is some medicine and glucose powder for him to take. Let him sleep for the night. I shall post you the bill in two days time so you don’t have to worry about that okay.” Said the doctor as he began to pack his bag to leave.
“Thank you so much doctor. We both really appreciate it.” Replied Zaharah as she walk the doctor and Ayob towards the door.
“Thanks Ayob for all the trouble and please send my regards to Ameenah.”
“No trouble at all. You take care alright and if anything do call us okay.”
After they left, Zaharah went back to take a look at Adam. Walking closer to where Adam was laying and she took a chair and place by Adam’s bedside. At that moment she felt so tired as though her whole strength has drained out from her soul. She tried to stay awake but sleep has overcome her.
Adam felt warmer by now. The agonizing pain has gradually subside but his throat was so sore. As he opens his eyes, he saw Zaharah was sleeping by his bedside. He looks at her and he felt sorry for her. He reaches out his hand to touch Zaharah’s hair when suddenly she wakes up. Upon seeing this he quickly drew back his hand.
“You’re awake. Are you feeling better now?” asked Zaharah looking very concerned.
“What happened?” Adam was not aware whatever happened to him the night before.
“You were having such a high fever and you were unconscious last night. I get you something to eat and drink alright” Zaharah was about to get up when Adam get hold of her hand. Zaharah was caught in surprised. Adam look at Zaharah’s face and all he could see is sadness and nervousness written all over her face.
“What have they done to you?” asked Adam.
Zaharah tugged his hand away and ran out from the room. She was not ready to tell the history of the sufferings and pain which she and her elder brother has to go through since their childhood.
Zaharah made some hot tea and place few plain biscuits on the plate. She mixed the glucose powder into the glass of water. She walks back into the room and she saw Adam was sitting up on the bed.
“Im so sorry Zaharah. I don’t mean to ask you that?”
Zaharah place the food on the table together with the medicine. She went towards Adam and held out her hands to help Adam walks towards the chair so he could had his breakfast and medicine.
“Thank you.” said Adam as he sat on the small chair. “Please do join me for breakfast.”
Zaharah ignored Adam’s request and decide to walk out towards the door.
“Please Zaharah.” pleads Adam.
“Can’t you see there’s only one cup of tea.” Zaharah snapped back. Adam smiled meekly. Zaharah walks out to the kitchen to pour herself a cup of tea and went back to the room. She took the chair which she place near the bed and place it opposite Adam. Still not looking at Adam she sat across of him. They had breakfast together in silence. Adam knew Zaharah was not comfortable to be near him and he understand. Adam stared at Zaharah and he was amazed by her beauty. Despite all that anger and sadness written all over her face, he saw that Zaharah has beautiful set of eyes. Her eyes was full of unanswered questions full of hidden stories in it. Her nose was small but sharp and she barely smile. She had shoulder length wavy hair which she tied it into a bun. Zaharah caught Adam’s eye staring at her.
“If you want to say something say it. You don’t have to stare;” cried Zaharah.
“You’re beautiful.”
Zaharah look at Adam widening her eyes and her mouth was still munching the biscuits.
Adam giggle at this sight of her.
“You’re nuts and silly. Simply get yourself bitten by a centipede. At least if you feel sick you should at least tell me earlier then I wouldn’t have to run out at night to get some help.” cried Zaharah.
“You’re concerned. That’s a good sign.” Adam was not giving up.
“Yah. I am concerned about my reputation cause I do not want the villagers to think that I had murdered my husband on our first what wedding night!” cried Zaharah. She was amazed by her reply as well. Okay this is so not her.
Adam laughed by he reply.
“So you think this is funny.”
‘’No! No!” Adam reply. He took the glucose drink and stare into it. He gave that wondering look again. Slitting his big round eyes.
“You enjoy staring at things aren’t you? That’s your glucose drink which the doctor had prescribed for you. Do take your medicines and please don’t give yourself any more trouble.”
“You sound like my mum. I like that.” Adam was beginning to enjoy this moment.
“Yah. Whatever. Another thing, all the food and the medicine which you are having, it was a loan which I had to request cause I don’t have any cash with me.”
“Oh I see.” Adam get’s up from his seat and he took out his wallet from his pants. “I hope this is enough for our expenses”
Zaharah took the money which Adam has given her.
“This is too much. Here you can have this back. I think this should be enough.” Zaharah place the balance of the money on the table.
“No if there’s balance save it” replied Adam. “I m going to have my shower now alright.”
Adam took a towel from his bag and walks out the room towards the bathroom.
Zaharah took the money which she had place it on the table and keep them into one of the cupboard.
Then she went back to the kitchen to prepare some food for lunch. She decide to cook some potato soup with the balance of the salted fish.
After Adam had his shower he walks into the kitchen. He sat on the stool while looking around the area. Then he saw all the pots and pans and some spoons and ladles.
“I don’t remember seeing this yesterday?”
“I bought them from the shop nearby. Later I need to go there to repay the loan. She’s a very nice lady. You should meet her.” replied Zaharah as she was stirring the soap.
Adam was fiddling his finger on the table clothe and as it was his habit he began studying the texture and the color of the clothe. Zaharah took a glance at him. She cannot deny the fact that this is a handsome man. He was tall and lanky. He too has big almond shape eyes. He has sharp but dark features. He has straight hair which he keep until his collar neck. He had stubborn fringe which keeps fall back to his forehead almost touching his eyes. Suddenly Adam caught Zaharah’s eye and he gave her a ‘Darlie’ toothpaste smile.
Zaharah look away. She can feel that she was blushing and her heartbeat was palpating and it was almost making her faint.
After lunch they decide to explore the village. Zaharah took some money to retuned back to the grocery lady.
“Hie young lady. Thanks you so much dear.” said Aunt Layla as she took the money from Zaharah’s hand. “This must be your husband. My what a handsome boy. You both do look such a beautiful couple”
“Thanks Aunt Layla “ replied Zaharah. Adam was beside Zaharah and to Zaharah’s surprised he was shy about Aunt Layla’s compliment.
Then they continue walking ahead towards the town area. They were quite a number of shops. They were some noodles shop, sweet and candies store and also clothing shop.
Adam took Zaharah’s hand and they both walk towards the clothe shop. At first Zaharah wants to pull back her hand. But to her surprised she held on. Adam turn to look at her and smile.
“Come on take a look at this. I am sure this will look nice on you.” cried Adam as he choose a simple white with several small pastel blue flower dress. Even before Zaharah could open her mouth he already paid for the dress. And he also bought few more ready made kebaya and sarong. He also bought some bed sheets and curtains. “These will definitely look nice for our new home.”
“You should not spend so much money on my clothes.”
“For my wife, does it matter.” replied Adam smiling back at her.
As they returned home it was pretty late in the evening. Adam began putting up the curtains in their living room window and also their bedroom while Zaharah make up the bed using the bed sheet which Adam has bought. Zaharah realized that Adam like soft pastel colour. The curtains were pastel lime green with some light silver line across them. And the bed sheet is nice cream colored with light lime pastel green flora printed all over it. Then they both began unpacking their clothes and place them neatly inside their cupboard. Zaharah was curious about the big cases which Adam had bought along with him but she decide not to ask about that at that moment. After they had finish cleaning and unpacking it was getting dark outside.
“At last all done. Yes!” cried Adam as he throw himself on the bed. He feel so much better now and it seems the pain and fever had miraculously gone.
“I heat up the soap then we can have it for dinner.” Zaharah decide to gets up when he felt her hand was held by Adam. She turn slowly to look at him. “We need to eat something” this time she tug his hand away gently and walks out towards the kitchen.
“And don’t get yourself stung by any other creatures. Do you hear me?”shouted Zaharah from the kitchen as she begins lighting up the stove.
“Yes mum!” replied Adam giggling away.
Zaharah laugh by his remarks and she knew sooner or later she will fell in love with this man. It is just that she needs time.
